Terre dei Vaaz was inspired by the enterprising nature of a converted Jewish Portuguese merchant, who helped restore the finances of the Kingdom of Naples.

In 1615, he founded Casa Vaaz, now known as Sammichele di Bari, taking in refugees from the Balkans, who brought with them their culture of winegrowing and the Primitivo grape variety.
